Summer Program

Bringing students together with their classmates and our own trusted teachers for an amazing summer program experience.

Purpose

Barrow Street Nursery School offers a six-week summer extension program designed to provide continuity and connection for children and families. Parents have shared that the program allows their child to keep learning in a safe, familiar, and trusted environment, while also engaging with a broader group of peers.

The summer session serves as a thoughtful bridge between school years, giving children extra time with close friends and meaningful opportunities to build new relationships with future classmates.

Philosophy

Our Summer Program builds on the same educational philosophy as the school-year curriculum, providing a developmentally appropriate, collaborative learning experience led by Barrow Street’s experienced early childhood educators. Guided by the Reggio Emilia Approach, classrooms engage in inquiry-based projects that connect meaningfully to children’s everyday lives and experiences.

While the structure and environment remain familiar, the summer session also introduces special seasonal experiences. Children enjoy rooftop water play, neighborhood excursions for older students, and a variety of enriching activities.

Programs

Lions Program
Our Lions Program is designed for children entering the 3s/4s or 4s/5s classrooms in the fall, as well as for current 4s/5s students. To join, children must be fully potty trained. While classrooms are mixed-age, we thoughtfully organize groups with age considerations in mind.

Children enjoy lunch at school each day – families should provide a packed lunch, with the exception of one school-provided pizza lunch each week. Beyond classroom time spent on inquiry and project work, children participate in a rich variety of experiences, including music, pottery, art, and movement. This program also includes field trips and neighborhood explorations, such as visits to local playgrounds, parks, and libraries. Past larger trips have included the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Teardrop Park in Battery Park City, Central Park Zoo, and the Brooklyn Transit Museum.

  • Full-Day Lions: Full-Day Lions runs from 9:00am – 3:00pm Monday through Thursday, and 9:00am-1:00pm on Friday.
  • Half-Day Lions: Half-Day Lions runs from 9:00am-1:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Separating Cubs Program
Our Separating Cubs Program is designed for children entering the 2s/3s classrooms in the fall. In a relaxed and nurturing environment, children engage in play, music, movement, and art experiences while fostering independence, creativity, and connection with peers. This is a drop-off class intended for children who have previously separated in Barrow Street’s Toddler Class.

This program runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from 9:00am to 1:00pm. Children enjoy lunch at school; families should send a packed lunch each day, except for one school-provided pizza lunch per week.

Non-Separating Cubs Program
Our Non-Separating Cubs Program is a shorter, introductory summer program for children entering our Toddler or 2s/3s classrooms who have not yet separated from a caregiver. In a relaxed and nurturing environment, children participate in play, music, movement, and art experiences, with a parent or caregiver present in the classroom. This program provides a gentle, playful introduction to the classroom experience, helping children build confidence, independence, and early social connections.
