And now, for this week’s Gazette:

Welcome to the Writing Center

As the Auroras continue to show enthusiasm for writing their names and the names of their family members on their art, we’ve found them asking how to write certain words like: love, mom, dad, and Aurora. Because of this, we have now opened a ‘writing center’ as one of our Open Time choices, which features word cards that the children can copy onto their own work. The Auroras have eagerly jumped at the chance to write messages for their families, friends, and teachers! We will continue to have this option available throughout the semester, which will be supported through our ongoing work with the Handwriting With Tears curriculum.

Spreading the Love

The Auroras are feeling the Valentine’s Day cheer! In anticipation of the classroom party, we decorated our Valentine’s bags by painting with a different material: plastic bags filled with water. This method challenged the group to use their fine-motor skills to pinch and gently hold the bag of water so that it did not spill, and they dipped the bags into paint before stamping them onto their gift bags. The class rejoiced on Wednesday when they saw their works of art full of Valentine’s goodies!

To celebrate, we took a walking trip to COPS Donuts to pick up some treats for our classroom. Prior to the visit, we had conversations in class about: safety while walking through the neighborhood, what we might see on the way there (like classroom favorite Bleecker St Pizza), and what kind of donuts we wanted. The class voted and was split between cinnamon sugar and pink frosted donuts, but luckily, we didn’t have to choose! When we arrived, the delicious donuts were ready in both flavors, and the class was enamored as they watched the final touches being added. We thanked COPS Donuts, and walked back to Barrow with a pep in our step. The Auroras were so excited to indulge in this treat, and in true Valentine’s Day spirit, they offered Melina donuts in the lobby to share the love! We then enjoyed the donuts in class and compared tasting notes as we read “Here Comes the Valentine’s Cat”.
