Welcome to the The Aurora’s Gazette. You can expect the Gazette twice monthly on Fridays. It will update you as to the goings on in our classroom, and give you full picture of our Brown Room community!
And now, for this week’s Report:
Found a Job
“I want to be line leader!” “Can I sweep the pretzels off the floor?” “Let me read the schedule!” “Can I help ring the bell?” are phrases we heard the kids repeat over and over the past couple of weeks. One thing was clear…they were ready for some jobs! Classroom jobs provide children with the opportunity to take responsibility and ownership over their room, while also teaching community care.
Jobs rotate weekly, and each child will have a job every week. Additionally, all children will get the opportunity to try each job. Alongside the social benefits, jobs also provide students the opportunity to flex some academic skills. For example, our schedule reader is practicing the literacy skill of reading from left to right, while ensuring specificity and clarity. Our attendance taker counts how many children are at school each day, making predictions of ‘how many’ kids they will count, practicing one to one correspondence, and working fine motor skills by writing the number in Roman numerals next to home and school. The ‘Universal Teacher’ job encourages students to practice flexibility and they may be called upon in a moments notice to complete a job if a friend is absent.
Throughout the year, the shape of these jobs will change and grow as students get older and refine their skills. The good news is, no matter the job-These kid are hired!
