Hello families! We will have a group post on the 2nd and 4th Friday of every month, barring holidays. These will be posted at noon and will contain news about curriculum happening in the Yellow Room, housekeeping notes, and notices about upcoming events. We are excited to have this mode of communication with you all.
We have had a fantastic week with the children. They spent time being scientists, mathematicians, artists, readers, dancers, musicians, and foodies all within the first week!
As we get to know each other and the room, we are exploring a variety of materials. At the art table, we have been using the pebble crayons and flare tip pens. The pebble crayons are great for forcing children to use their pincher fingers, rather than a fist grip, and the flare tip pens help children clearly see the lines they are drawing.
The children spent a lot of time with play dough, using loose parts and gems to create all sorts of play scenarios. They loved using their hands in our sensory bin garden as well. We are excited to introduce more sensory materials, including clay, in the coming weeks.
This group is full of builders! They have been using wooden blocks, magnetic Tegu blocks, and Magna tiles on the rug. Once we added in animals, building habitats became the most popular building task.
The children have been learning new routines and revisiting old ones. As they are now in the 3s/4s, they are ready to be more independent and do tasks for themselves that teachers might have done for them in the past. For example, they now serve themselves at snack! They have all been doing a great job of making sure there’s enough snack for everyone at their table. They have been using glass cups instead of water bottles and it has been a success. Next week, they will start pouring on their own at snack and lunch…we will make sure to ask Eddie for extra paper towels!
Next week, we will start sign in sheets. This is a great way to establish a morning routine, practice fine motor skills, and learn to write their name with ease and comfort. We are starting off by giving all children the same sign in sheet and not intervening this week. We want to see how each child signs in so we can create a holistic approach to hone necessary skills later. There will be no “wrong” or “right” way to sign in this week.
Does your child “write” at home? Do they help with grocery lists or thank you cards after birthdays or holidays?
We are excited to close out our first week in our new community with a birthday celebration! We hope to see many of you at the Parent Teacher Cocktail Evening next week. Please feel free to reach out with any questions!
