News from the Lunch Bunch

What is lunch bunch?

Children eat in community, develop self help skills and independence, play, and work on themed projects. Lunch bunch happens daily in two sessions: 12-1pm and 1-2pm.

Who are the teachers?

Ursula Rhymer and Brenna Fisher

What have we done so far?

1. Learned routines: Children develop persistence, resilience, and routines for self care while they take on self help skills under the guidance of Ursula and Brenna.

2. Studied Kindness: We read Kindness Makes Us Strong by Sophie Beer and created a heart chain using a special watercolor palette Jahidah (curriculum specialist) created for us.

3. Built community: Lunch Bunch is a mixed age group where Barrow kiddos interact with children in other classes. Children make connections and find new friends that build a sense of belonging within our broader community.

What’s our next themed project?

We will study magnets and other connectors (clips, legos, magna-tiles, tape, glue, c-clamps and more!).

How do you sign up?

Email to join once (we got your back for those *flexible thinking* days), or to sign up for the spring semester.

Children worked with cardboard, tempura sticks, stickers representing shared interests like community helper vehicles, flowers, rainbows, and animals.

“Please save my work for me, I have more to do next time.”

What do we do during lunch bunch?

“We eat, and ride bicycles. We make art. We play. We play hide and seek and tag.”

Our Friendship Branch

At its core lunch bunch is about friendship. Everyone plays here. Longtime colleagues Ursula and Brenna bring in Barrow community values like listening, respect, care, experiential learning, and spreading shine to create a curriculum as diverse as the students in their care.

We believe in nourishment of the body with food, of the mind with creativity, and of the heart with kindness. Projects like our friendship branch showcase these values and the collaboration between child and adult. At its best, early childhood shows us that learning is ageless.

To those already involved, thank you for sharing your kiddos with us. To those yet to sign up, even just for a day, know we have your back and you’re always welcome here.
