Exploring Color and Light

The Rainbow Whales have been experimenting with light recently. The students have been thinking about the difference between artificial and natural light and how light helps sighted people see objects. We have been reading the book Lights – Day and Night, The Science of How Light Works by Susan Hughes and Ellen Rooney. Discussions have included questions about how batteries and electricity work, how their eyes register light and use light to see things, how light reflects and refracts off of items, and how shadows are created. The Rainbow Whales will explore more about these questions in the following weeks.

This week in science, the students experimented with color mixing on light tables. They learned how different shades and tints of color can be seen and how the light from the light tables emphasizes the differences in the shades of color. We briefly discussed the visible light spectrum, which is the segment of the electromagnetic spectrum that the human eye can see.
