Documentation: Floor Books…From the Child’s POV

Documentation is a way in which teachers reflect back on the experiences that the children engage in throughout the year. We document our (teachers and children) creative processes by writing down dialogue and conversations, printing and displaying pictures and through saving artifacts of children’s work. Documentation can be looked at as a form of communication with all members of the community.

 

Though much of the documentation you interact with is teacher created (including this post!), the children have been working on the skill of documenting for themselves through the use of Floor Books. These books are big with blank pages that we have begun filling with artifacts from our cooking experiences together.

 

As with any activity, we are always thinking about ways in which we are encouraging and supporting children’s development. This process creates the opportunity to organize and collaborate as they negotiate where to put which pictures. It provides space to practice fine motor development through cutting and writing as well. One child was inspired to write Pizza!

 

This work together gave us the chance to reflect back on all the cooking we’ve done so far and reiterate the learning that came from it!
