Neighborhood Architecture Walk

In order to celebrate the (slightly) warmer weather and to get some fresh air, the Water Zombies made it all the across 7th Ave to look at local buildings and see the Grove Street bird houses.

We stopped to take photos of any buildings that looked interesting to us. One child was very excited to point out her older sister’s school and insisted we needed a photo of it. Another building that captured a lot of attention was this pink building with tiles, which is unusual for New York.

The bird houses were the most exciting part of our walking trip. We noticed all the different styles, including some that looked like real houses. The children noted the different materials used, and we made some connections to famous buildings they have grown familiar with. A child compared one bird house to Philip Johnson’s Glass House, an old favorite, and several of us agreed that one bird house looked like Frank Gehry designed it.

When we got back to school, we printed out photos of the bird houses and we are going to make them into a book. Who knows what they will inspire!
