Four and five-year-olds are particularly apt at figuring out what’s fair and what isn’t. Sometimes they’re even “too” good at it!
Bet it hasn’t been long since you’ve heard, “That’s not fair!!!”
It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that fairness is quite topical in the Red Room, as well.
This coming Monday, your children will have a home day in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. For many, his story serves as a poignant reminder of peace, belonging, and fairness. Given that those values ring just as true for our classroom community, it not only felt important to share about Dr. King, but also how he helped to make our world more fair.
Before reading a book about the holiday and his life, we asked the kids if they knew anything about Dr. King or the holiday itself. Immediately, someone shouted out,
“I love him!”
We were appreciative of the sentiment and jumped right into reading the book below, Celebrating Holidays, Martin Luther King, Jr Day.
Given that his actual birthday is January 15th, we decided to bake Sweet Potato Muffins as a birthday treat for him. He loved Sweet Potatoes, which are a staple in Southern comfort food.
To culminate our celebration of his birthday, we enjoyed our tasty muffins…
AND listened/danced to Stevie Wonder’s version of “Happy Birthday.”
Fun Fact – this song was written to support the effort towards creating a national holiday in honor of Dr. King’s legacy. Two years after the song’s release, Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into existence!
We hope you enjoy the long weekend!
