At-TEN-dance
Next week in the Brown Room, we will begin doing a daily sign in using our ‘Name Tokens’. (More on that in a later Storypark!) A daily sign is a way we help to promote belonging, alongside rich academic opportunities, in the classroom. Each day, your child will move their token from ‘home’ to ‘school’–a special way of announcing ‘I am here! I am a part of this community.’ It also provides the students the opportunity to see is having a home day, providing us the chance to think about our friends from afar.
We will be using a ten frame as the basis for our daily sign in. A ten frame is a two-by-five rectangular frame that can be used to help children visualize numbers that are equal to or less than ten. The ten frame provides an important visual component. As counters are moved around the frame, children can see how numbers are represented in different ways building their number sense skills. Each day our classroom Attendance Taker will count the Name Tokens within the ten frames, letting the class know how many students are in our class for the day. This will also help to strengthen one-to-one correspondence skills as children must count and point to each Token.
In preparation for our daily sign in work, we have been placing ten frames with loose parts out as a choice at Open Time. Students have begun to play with how different items can be arranged within the frame in both novel and exciting ways. We will use these explorations as a jumping off point for more in-depth conversation about ten frames with your child next week. Take a peek below!
