As autumn arrives, we’ve been exploring seasonal changes in science, and today we made connections with the book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. I had collected various types of leaves, some indigenous to the United States (such as the Oak and the Smoketree), and some ornamental varieties from Europe (such as the Linden). The children used these leaves in their exploration today.
What is Leaf Man About?
Leaf Man is a whimsical story about a figure made of autumn leaves who is blown by the wind across various landscapes—marshes, orchards, and prairies. The book is beautifully illustrated using real leaves and other natural materials, inspiring creativity and a love for the outdoors. The simple, poetic text follows the Leaf Man on his journey, reminding us that “A Leaf Man’s got to go where the wind blows.”
Why We Use It in Science
Science and Nature Exploration: The book is a perfect springboard for discussing the signs of autumn, why leaves change color and fall, and the life cycle of trees. We used the story to talk about different types of leaves and the environment.
Creativity and Art in Science: Lois Ehlert’s unique collage illustrations encourage children to see everyday natural objects as creative art supplies. It sparks their imagination, showing them how leaves, sticks, and stones can be transformed into animals and people.
Fine Motor Skills in Science: Activities related to the book, such as collecting and arranging leaves, help children develop their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
Extending the Learning at Home
I encourage you to continue learning and having fun at home! Here are a few simple ideas:
Go on a Nature Walk: Take your child on a walk around your neighborhood or a local park to collect leaves and other natural “treasures.” Discuss their colors, shapes, and textures.
Create Your Own Leaf Person/Creature: Using the items you collected, create a leaf person or animal on a piece of paper.
Write a Story: Write a short story together about where their leaf creation might travel if the wind blew it away.
