Caterpillars, Butterflies and Ladybugs
If your children bring home some science vocabulary, like pupa, larva and crysalis, blame it on butterflies and ladybugs. The Speed Cars have been very invested in the transformations these tiny creatures undergo and signs of life they offer. Empathetic vocabulary like delicate and fragile come up, as well as socially-attuned behaviors like self-control have surfaced.
We took the quietest, most careful elevator ride up to the roof with our butterflies.
One by one, the butterflies left the net. Some flew away quickly and energetically, so fast that we hardly saw them leave! It was drizzling, so some butterflies settles under leaves and grasses on the roof to rest from the rain on the wood chips. We wish you well, delicate, fragile butterflies!
Minetta Park Antics
Walking to the playground with three or four children is very different than walking with thirteen. So the Speed Cars have been practicing following teacher safety directions to the letter. For instance, the children walk on their own two feet the entire way, respond immediately to teacher calls and cross the street with an imaginary “bubble” in their mouth, to motivate full silence while in the crosswalk. These safety habits prepare them for longer field trips in the future and opportunities to leave the school building for more adventures more often in coming years.
Kids’ Requests
The last days of school bring back the greatest hits! Kids have requested blasts from the past, including rainbow painting, sand and water play, painting with their feet (!), exploring a new playground, marble tracks, and superhero capes (among others). More on this journey soon!
