Summer Program

Bringing students together with their classmates and our own trusted teachers for an amazing summer program experience.

Purpose

Barrow Street Nursery School offers an extension program for 6 weeks in the summer. Families have reported that participation in this program allows their child to continue learning in a safe, trusted, and familiar environment paired with the opportunity to spend time with a wider range of peers. The summer weeks provide a nice transition from one school year to the next, with additional time spent with familiar friends and the chance to form new relationships with future classmates.

Philosophy

Our Summer Program follows the same approach as the regular school curriculum, offering a developmentally appropriate, collaborative learning experience supported by experienced Barrow Street early childhood professionals. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach, classrooms engage in inquiry projects that are relevant to the children’s lives and experiences. Our summer program is designed to be familiar but also incorporate some new experiences, including water play on the roof, trips outside of the building (for older students), and other enrichment activities.

Programs

Lions
Our Lions Program is designed for children entering our 3s/4s or 4s/5s classrooms in the fall, as well as our current 4s/5s children. Children must be potty trained in order to register for this group. Classroom ages are mixed, although we do keep age in mind when designing groups.

In addition to time spent in the classroom engaged in investigation and project work, children are offered an extraordinary range of experiences including music, pottery, soccer, art and drama. Children also take part in field trips and neighborhood explorations. Past trips have included the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Teardrop Park in Battery Park City, Central Park Zoo and the Brooklyn Transit Museum.

Our Lions Program is from 9:00am-1:00pm, Monday through Friday. Children enjoy lunch at school, and families should send a packed lunch daily with the exception of one pizza lunch, provided by the school, each week.

Traveling Lions
Our Traveling Lions Program is designed for our current 4s/5s children. Current 4s/5s children are also welcome to join our regular Lions program if preferred. This group takes almost daily trips outside of school to explore our neighborhood and larger community. Past trips have included the Museum of Natural History, the Freedom Tower, Central Park, and the Staten Island Ferry. Our Traveling Lions program is from 9:00am-1:00pm, Monday through Friday in June ONLY. Children enjoy lunch at school, and families should send a packed lunch daily with the exception of one pizza lunch, provided by the school, each week.

Separating Cubs Program
Our Separating Cubs Program is designed for children entering our 2s/3s classrooms in the fall. Play, music and art experiences are provided in a relaxed and nurturing environment, and separation is supported for those children who have previously separated. This is a drop-off class for children who have already separated as part of Barrow Street’s Toddler Class. If your child has separated in a non-Barrow Street program, please contact us to discuss whether or not this class is right for your child. This program is on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 9:00am until 1:00pm. Children enjoy lunch at school, and families should send a packed lunch daily with the exception of one pizza lunch, provided by the school, each week.

Non-Separating Cubs Program
Our Non-Separating Cubs Program is a shorter program designed for children entering our Toddler or 2s/3s but have not previously separated. Play, music and art experiences are provided in a relaxed and nurturing environment, and a parent or caregiver is required to be present in the classroom.
