Fixing Our Mop

How can we fix our mop?

During an open time, the children noticed that our beloved toy mop was broken! The head of the mop detached from the pole and was no longer working. We decided that this was something we could fix as our first problem-posing learning opportunity of the school year!

Initial ideas included tape, string, and glue. To get started, we made a Sticky Test Committee. This group was in charge of testing our different glues and tapes to see what would work best.

These children worked diligently to find the most sticky material. They tested glue sticks, regular glue, and clear glue as well as masking tape, packing tape, book binding tape, and art tape.

After the group glued the mop head on, one child said that the broom needed tape on the handle “so it can hold more easy.” Another child helped them add lots of grip tape before they put the mop on the drying rack.

At a morning meeting, the class talked about how they fixed the mop and how we needed to be gentle with it from now on. We added the mop back onto the rack and it’s ready to be back in action!
